Hello dear readers! Welcome back to another section of my tutorial on Python. In this tutorial guide, we are going to be studying about the Os lchmod() method.

The Python os lchmod() method changes the mode of the path to the numeric mode. If path is a symlink, this affects the symlink rather than the target.

Note — This method is available on Python version 2.6 onwards.

Syntax

The following below is the syntax for Python Os lchmod() method -

os.lchmod(path, mode);

Parameter Details

  • path — The file path for which mode is to be set.
  • mode — It may take one of the below mentioned values or bitwise ORed combinations of them.
  • stat.S_ISUID — It sets the user ID on execution.
  • stat.S_ISGID — It sets the group ID on execution.
  • stat.S_ENFMT — The record locking is enforced.
  • stat.S_ISVTX — Save text image after execution.
  • stat.S_IREAD — Read by owner.
  • stat.S_IWRITE — Write by owner.
  • stat.S_IEXEC — Execute by owner.
  • stat.S_IRWXU — Read, write, and as well execute by owner.
  • stat.S_IRUSR — Read by owner.
  • stat.S_IWUSR — Write by owner.
  • stat.S_IXUSR — Execute by owner.
  • stat.S_IRWXG — Read, write, and also execute by group.
  • stat.S_IRGRP — Read by group.
  • stat.S_IWGRP — Write by group.
  • stat.S_IXGRP — Execute by group.
  • stat.S_IRWXO — Read, write, and also execute by others.
  • stat.S_IROTH — Read by others.
  • stat.S_IWOTH — Write by others.
  • stat.S_IXOTH — Execute by others.

Return Value

It does not return any value.

Example

The following below is a simple example -

#!/usr/bin/python

import os, sys

# Open a file
path = "/var/www/html/foo.txt"
fd = os.open( path, os.O_RDWR|os.O_CREAT )

# Close opened file
os.close( fd )

# Now change the file mode.
# Set a file execute by group.
os.lchmod( path, stat.S_IXGRP)

# Set a file write by others.
os.lchmod("/tmp/foo.txt", stat.S_IWOTH)

print "Changed mode successfully!!"

Output

When the above code is executed, it will produce the following result -

print "Changed mode successfully!!"

Alright guys! This is where we are rounding up for this tutorial post. In my next tutorial, we are going to be studying about Python the OS lchown() Method.
